Activity groups help Simon to flourish

August 16, 2011

Activity groups help Simon to flourish - Core Children's ServicesSimon has autism and limited communication. He is a happy young man but will occasionally ‘flap’ his hands when he is unsure of something. It took him a while to engage in activities - he preferred to sit back and observe before choosing to join in. Group leaders were very happy for him to go at his pace.

After three sessions into the group Simon was participating in a circle game designed to aid the young people to learn names and he said the group leader’s name a really positive step forward for him. School have also reported that since attending the group Simon has been more confident in communicating at school.

He formed a particular friendship with one of the young girls attending the group and was so eager to get there that he would be ready at 9am an hour before the group started. Mum used to drive him around the town to keep him occupied beforehand.

He has an older sister, with a baby, and took great delight in showing the baby to his new friends.
Simon’s evaluation forms show that he has really enjoyed the activity group, has made new friend and in particular enjoyed the Easter Egg Hunt.
