Education Support Programme benefits a young person in care

March 01, 2011

Background

In year 10 Anna was not attending school regularly – a pattern that had developed over the previous 2 years. She had low self-esteem, a lack of confidence and was a school refuser. Different strategies had been used previously to encourage her to attend school. She was refusing counselling and because she was putting herself at risk, she was taken into care.

Education Support Programme

Core Children’s Services co-ordinated and delivered an education programme for 10 hours a week over a period of 4 months. AQA Unit Awards for academic and life skills were studied to re-engage Anna and boost her confidence. Our Education Officer liaised closely with the school and other professionals involved and supported Anna to attend meetings. We helped secure a part time place for Anna at an appropriate provision and supported her successful transition to College at the end of year 11.

Outcome

Anna re-engaged in learning and achieved 100% attendance in Year 11. She achieved 2 GCSE examination passes and gained a place at a local college for her Post 16 education provision.
