Sarah is a young lady of 16 who has a learning disability. She attended a series of 10 activity groups held in the North of the Country and staff describe her as a ‘real character’. Sarah gave nicknames to all the staff members working with the young people and the leader was known as ‘Lady Gaga’. Sarah also enjoyed bringing things in to show the staff and other young people. She became a popular member of the group and enjoyed spending time at the group.
Sarah’s family consists of mum, dad and older sister. Dad is deaf so Sarah communicates with him in sign language. Sarah’s older sister is very involved in caring for her.
Attending the group enabled Sarah to make new friends, be involved in different activities and learn new skills. Sarah was also encouraged to make choices and decisions about how the activity group should be run.
Mum was very pleased with the activity groups because Sarah’s attendance gave mum valuable time to spend with Sarah’s older sister and they took the opportunity to attend the gym together
Sarah just described the groups as a ‘big super day’.
