Short Break Care for Disabled Children and Young People

Background

Core Children’s Services specialises in providing short break care for disabled children and young people. This provides valuable relief for families and an opportunity to spend more focused time with other members within the family unit.

In October 2010, a couple purchased short break care to provide support for their Autistic children on a three night stay away from home. Four support workers took the two teenage boys on a residential trip to Kinver Scout Camp while their parents remained at home, taking some time for themselves.

Providing Short Break Care

The boys were in their element amongst the beautiful natural surroundings, taking part in sporting activities, creative pastimes, board games and relaxation at the log cabin. In their time together at the West Midlands retreat, the boys listened to music, danced, painted, watched films and went for long walks around the local area.

Naturally, the young people required a certain level of daily care, including specific dietary needs. In discussion with the parents, Core Children’s Services took this into careful consideration and the trained support workers were able to ensure that the young men received the appropriate level of care at all times.
