Short break care for a disabled child benefits the whole family

Providing short break care for a child with Down Syndrome offers great benefits the child and his family.

Case

Core Children's Services was called upon to provide short break care for a ten year old boy who has Down Syndrome and has challenging behaviour. His parents requested to have Short Breaks as they felt that they were unable to spend much time with their other children as he requires constant supervision and can be very demanding. This includes waking up ver early in the morning, which has had an accumulative effect on his parents; they needed to catch up on their sleep. 

Providing short break care

The family was linked with Core Children's Services and following introductions the child began overnight stays in August 2010, initially for two nights per month. He has settled in fantastically well over time, with his confidence growing with each short break. The short break carer at Core Children's Services has nurtured the autistic child's love for spending time in the kitchen and developed his skills and safety awareness in cooking - the carer and child have developing a strong bond together.

The child's review was held in November 2010 and this was extremely positive. The parents are really pleased with Core Children's Services and that is being provided. Furthermore, they are welcoming of the advice and support that Core Children's Services can provide. Working in partnership with the parents has been the key to ensuring the service being provided is a positive experience for the parents and the autistic child himself.
