Therapy Services for Families

Core Children’s Services is dedicated to supporting the therapeutic needs of parents and children going through difficult times or a family separation. We aim to work closely with birth families, foster families and adoptive families to support their holistic needs.

Supporting families undergoing separation

Separation, such a divorce or the adoption of a child, may be the result of years of difficulties or a sudden event. The decision may have been made by one or all members of the family, or by a Local Authority or Court order. Whatever the circumstances, any number of responses can occur in children and other family members, such as;

• Feelings of worry, rejection, anger or confusion
• Difficulty sleeping, eating and socialising
• Unusual, antisocial or aggressive behaviour

The consequences of family separation can manifest in many different ways and can have serious consequences on the emotional and behavioural wellbeing and development of children.

Core Children’s Services therapists are able to support families going through a separation by providing expert advice, encouraging the expression of thoughts and feelings, and thinking with parents and children about behavioural difficulties and how to overcome them. Therapy sessions would involve:

• A meeting with parents alone to express their difficulties
• A meeting with children either alone or with a parent
• A meeting with the family to discuss a therapy plan

Therapy sessions last 50 minutes and can take place at any one of over 80 designated Core Children’s Services locations across the UK.

Therapy services for foster families

Children who are removed from their birth families and placed in foster care will often have experienced abuse, neglect or other forms of harmful behaviour. In some cases, these young people will go on to display difficult or inappropriate behaviour themselves as a way of dealing with past experiences.

At Core Children’s Services, we offer therapeutic support to foster carers and foster families to deal effectively with troubling behaviour, implement therapeutic parenting strategies and recognise and address attachment difficulties. Offering foster carers time to think, talk and reflect with a therapist ensures that their own anxieties and emotions are contained and don’t affect the stability of a placement.

Core Children’s Services is also able to offer therapeutic training to foster carers and fostering professionals through the following programmes:

• Understanding the Impact of Complex Trauma
• Reflective Practice and Therapeutic Parenting
• Identity and Belonging for Looked After Children
• Raising Self Esteem in Looked After Children
